There was a large photography trade show at Javit’s Center in NYC Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this past week called PDN PhotoPlus. It was free registration for the basic expo which got you on the trade room floor. I had planned to go with a friend of mine on Thursday but it was cold and raining so we skipped and moved on to Friday. It was worth the wait, it was still chilly but we would have been miserable on the short walk from the parking garage to the car if we had gone on Thursday. I don’t know what the estimates on attendance were but it was pretty packed compared to opening day last year and a lot different. There were a lot more lighting displays and printing companies had a larger presence. The paper companies weren’t giving out as many samples but I scored some fantastic paper from a company called Canson, I’ve already printed one of the sheets off and the quality is great, I may request it from printers if I have to do anything over an 8″x10″ print. Canon had their stage with free seminars like last year, we sat and watched most of Clay Blackmore’s talk on posing, I’ve got the poses in my head but since the lighting portion sort of went over my head. Sony had a much smaller display than last year when they had a half pipe set up. I played with Pentax’s new mini camera the Q, it’s amazing the quality image and bells and whistles they packed in such a small camera – and they beat Nikon to the punch by a few months. It was an enjoyable day, I met Damien Franco from photography site Pixiq while there and we had fun just bs’ing about life in general. I took a few shots but haven’t processed them yet, they’re probably ho-hum with the amount of people getting in the way and trying to shoot models that were constantly moving.
Saturday morning I woke up around 6am and looked outside, despite forecasts for a major Nor’Easter coming in the sky looked a little cloudy and sunrise was only an hour away. I got ready and after notifying my wife so she wouldn’t worry I snuck off in the middle of the night (she knows if the cat is still here I haven’t left her though) I headed up towards Litchfield. Somehow in the half hour drive up there it clouded over and ruined what could have been a beautiful scene. I shot a couple of pictures but again haven’t processed them. We ran off to do some errands at the mall after I got home and finished up just as the snow started falling We ended up with ten to eleven inches of the white stuff and for some reason I never went out to take pictures – it would have been a good test of the four wheel drive too.We kept our power through the storm but others weren’t so lucky, while I was looking out the window enjoying Mother Nature’s show close to 800,000 people’s electric was out.
Sunday I had every intent of going out and getting some images, unfortunately there were car issues that needed to be resolved (and still need to be finished as I type this) so I never made it out of our driveway. Today I may go out but I’m debating it, the roads are still a mess with downed trees, traffic signals not working and people still driving like idiots. We’ll see what happens and if I do I’ll be sure to post some pictures.
